We’ve all seen it before; the female rushing to the bathroom clutching her purse as if she’s got the government's biggest top secret in there. What’s really in her bag? Pads or tampons. Or maybe you were in a public place, you reach into your bag to get something only to have a pad or tampon accidentally fall out and you’re instantly humiliated. But why? There’s nothing to be embarrassed about.
t’s not a secret that some guys feel a little clueless and maybe even a little uncomfortable when it comes to discussing menstrual cycles. But some women feel just as uncomfortable. While here in the United States, period shame isn’t as bad as it could be; in some countries women are shunned by society when they get their periods. But even here in the United States asking one of your fellow girl friends for a tampon out in public can feel like you two are trading something illegal.
Most women (but not all) get their periods. It’s a natural biological process, and we shouldn’t be taught to feel embarrassed or ashamed about it. So why do some of us feel the need to hide our periods? It’s a simple answer. It’s not glamorous enough to be accepted in society.
Periods are awful. They hurt, they’re messy, and in some cases maybe they’re stinky. The unrealistic need to constantly present the best versions of ourselves, can cause us to want to hide our periods.
So in light of embracing all of the things that make you perfect just the way you are, make sure you embrace your period too.
