Why You Should Consider Shopping at Boutiques

With popular malls and department stores beginning to close I cannot help but wonder if I should be supporting the online shopping that is causing this. Surprisingly boutiques are on the rise despite being less popular than major stores such as Kohls or Macys.

Boutiques seems to be becoming more popular due to their ability to stay up to date with the hottest trends and take advantage of social media. Benefits of a boutique include unique items, you are usually supporting a smaller business, and you become a trendsetter by staying up to date with the newest fashion fads.

With benefits come disadvantages as well. The sizes are usually off, they do not have as many perks such as free shipping returns like larger companies, and their prices are usually quite a bit higher. The best boutiques are quant personally owned ones you would find in a downtown area but the main ones on the rise today are online boutiques. The rules for shopping online boutiques are the same as all other online shopping, check reviews for quality and make sure it is a legit company!

Winter Trends

As the brisk air begins to move in you know that it is officially time to swap the flannel for the coziest sweater in your closet. Here are some major fashion trends that you can easily follow this winter.

Boots will simply never go out of style. Thanks to comfort, quality, and accessibility there has never been a better way to take on the snow, wind, and slush. Comfortable heeled boots, booties, and thigh high boots are also always in style as soon as the temperature drops.

We first saw this making a comeback due to Gucci belts but this does not mean you need to go drop $500 on an accessory. My favorite belt, which is pictured below, was $6 at a thrift store.

Plaid Patterns

As various 90’s styles comeback into trend one that has seemed to target this winter is plaid patterns. Whether that be plaid skirts, pants, or cardigans, plaid is coming back and it is coming fast.

You would think the icy air would want to make everyone cover up as much as possible but as seen in the early winter and fall skirts are also making a comeback, specifically the mini skirt, in styles such as plaid, jean, leather, and corduroy.

Sherpas are hitting the market fast and they are fluffier than ever. Most companies sell them for a hefty $200 however if you are open to trying different qualities even stores like Walmart are now carrying them for as little as $20.

Start Your New Year With a Gift for Yourself

If you have any interest in the beauty community then you must have heard of the new obsession with lifestyle subscription boxes. They are bombarding Pinterest, Instagram, and even YouTube. The idea is cute, creative, and seems to be a lot of fun. However, when it comes down to it, is the $50 box really worth it?

I have seen ads for this product for a very long time and I am a sucker for all things beauty, fashion, and lifestyle. I figured I had to stop putting it off and I bought myself a one year subscription of 4 boxes (one for each season) for about $180.

To get the full experience I decided to select that “surprise” option which means I would be unaware of what I was getting until I opened the box in person. After getting the box which was full of high-end products all the way from Anthropology lotion to a unique workout accessory. The fact that this box has such variety and always comes with full size products leads me to conclude that it is worth the cost but I recommend customizing the box instead of allowing the company to pick the products for you. This way you get what you want and you truly get what you paid for.

Shop Your Own Closet!

Written By: RO

Ever been stuck in a rut with the same damn clothes that you day after day push through your closet? Do you look at some items with disgust? Are you ready to throw it all away and just start fresh?! But is your bank account telling you “bitch please!”

Have no fear! There are some true gems and classic pieces in your closet that just need to be brought into the light and away from the cold dark corners from that weird up against the wall behind the door kind of place. You know which place I'm talking about. The same place you shove things when it's a one time wham bam thank you mam’ kind of piece. (But you keep it anyways... for decades!!!) Uh huh, I'm talking to you.

First off, clean out the closet. Take out the items you know you don't want to wear ever again. When you find yourself in a tough situation deciding if to keep a piece ask yourself this simple question “if you were down to your last $5 would you buy that piece again?” If it's a yes, put it back. If it's a no, then toss it. You may come across a piece that you feel you just can't throw it out and uncertain of when you will wear it again. Ask yourself this question “does it bring you happiness when you touch that piece?” If it's a yes then keep it. If its it's a no, then toss it!

Once you have cleared it all, look at what you have left. Color sort it now. From one side to the other start from lightest item to darkest item. This way you can see if you have too much of one color or not enough of another.  This may even inspire you to venture out and shop for colors you have never owned! Possibly even a new style.

Nooooow, the fun begins! Let's make some outfits come to life! You gotta remember some basic fashion rules. Trends come and go, but these rules will always help you look fashion savvy even though most of your threads are outdated. However, if matched correctly,  you will look like you are ahead of the next trending season!

Rule 1: Wear All Black. You pick the type of piece just make sure it's all black. It's chic and always an easy go to. Pick a shoe, earrings, purse, or even a lipstick that will pop and make you look chic effortlessly.

Rule 2: Add Texture. Whatever  you decide to wear, add some texture. It can be simple such as a scarf (according to season), hat, or a leather something. Try your leather skirt or mesh leggings with a t-shirt.

Rule 3: Mix and Match Prints. Be as bold as you want. Like florals and leopard!

Rule 4: Toughen Up Your Girly Side. Have a pretty floral or pastel colored dress? Throw in some combat boots or that leather jacket that's been hanging in your closet for so long! Even a baseball cap can turn your pretty in pink look to tough in pink instead. Try your ripped up jeans under a cute babydoll dress.

Rule 5: Wear Your Confidence. You don't have to go shopping for confidence, just find it in yourself. It's always been there.

Three Parisian Fashion Trends to Make Your Own

Written By: Erin Bach

From runways and couture to chignons and capsule wardrobes, Paris is no stranger to style. I experienced this style first hand recently when I stayed in Paris for a few days with my husband for a belated honeymoon.

I’m a horrible tourist because I hate crowds of people. I do, however, love people-watching, so I often found myself observing others when we were walking through the city or crammed on the metro. Pretty quickly,I picked up on three trends that I think are worthy of repeating.

#1: Sneakers

I am the queen of hating on sneakers. I only wear them for working out because I don’t like the way they look on me, and I generally feel frumpy and awkward when I wear them. However, I learned my lesson last time I was in Europe that walking around in sandals or “cute” shoes all day basically makes you want to amputate your feet by lunchtime, so I packed sneakers “to be practical.”

Not only did they save my feet, but I noticed that nearly all of the women I saw who looked chic or stylish were also wearing them. Turns out, sneakers aren’t so bad after all.

There are a few keys to getting the sneaker look right. First, it needs to be slim, not bulky (no 90s TV dad sneakers). Second, choose the color carefully. Luckily, mine are gray/black so they went with my wardrobe. A pop of color with the sneaker works well too.

#2: Leather Jacket

I’ve researched enough about capsule wardrobes to know that a leather (or faux-leather) jacket is a great lightweight piece that can be adapted for multiple occasions. In Paris, I saw leather jackets all over the place.

I saw them paired with dresses, jeans, workout gear, business attire, etc. I love the juxtaposition of a pretty dress with a leather jacket, just as I love the look of a proper-looking business woman also being a badass.

Pretty much the same rules for the sneakers apply here: slim not bulky, and choose a color that is either a neutral or a statement.

#3: Bold Lip

Who doesn’t love a good bold lip, right? I definitely do, but I’ve shied away from bright lip colors because I thought they made me look like a clown (I’m pretty pale). I adored all of the bold lip colors I saw on the streets and subways of Paris, so I decided to go for it!

In fact, sunblock and lipstick became my go-to “makeup” for the entire trip, and I loved it. I saw women of all face shades and shapes rocking bright lipstick, so if you’re thinking “I can’t do that,” oh yes you can!

So there you have it. Bring out your inner style badass this summer by choosing one of these trends to make your own (or adapt all three). Have fun!
